Challenge
Matthieu Bolufer is creative director at Creano, which he co-founded. The rest of the time he draws: inks and canvases steeped in pop culture, from the Mandalorian to the Joker. These pieces lived only in his sketchbooks and on social media, where people look at them for three seconds before scrolling to the next. He wanted a place of his own, one that gives the drawings the time and space a news feed doesn’t, and that people remember once the page is closed.
Approach
We prototyped the site before designing it. We needed to know what the WebGL layer allowed: how far to push a distortion without damaging a line, how many textures to hold in memory. Matthieu then drew within those limits, instead of discovering them at the end. The project moved forward in back-and-forth rounds, on playable versions rather than static screens.
Key solutions
We rendered the whole gallery in WebGL with PixiJS: the drawings arrive as textures that the engine moves, distorts and sequences. We built the loading into the staging, and the slider reuses the same distortions to move from one artwork to the next. Matthieu manages everything from WordPress, and adds a drawing without touching the code. Of all our projects, this is the one that pushes interaction the furthest.
